She Fell Thirty Feet. Her Body Healed in Six Weeks. Her Brain Is Still Working On It.
Jul 21, 2026What a backyard chicken named Cordelia taught me about trauma, the nervous system, and why "just get over it" is bad science.

Cordelia was living exactly the kind of life every backyard chicken should have — scratching through dirt, hunting insects, free-ranging the yard with the quiet confidence of an animal who knows exactly where home is.
Then a red-tailed hawk decided she looked like lunch.
He swept down, grabbed her by the back of the neck, and lifted her into the air. But Cordelia was larger than he expected. About thirty feet up, he lost his grip.
She fell.
Her owners watched the whole thing happen.
When they arrived at the hospital, they were as shaken as she was.
Cordelia was in shock. Nearly all the skin from the back of her head down her neck had been torn away by the hawk's talons. She wasn't standing. She was panting. We moved fast administering pain control, IV fluids, and stabilization, then rushed her to radiographs. Her legs were not broken. A small miracle.
The external wounds were another story.
We cleaned, dressed, improvised bandages, and after she was stable, we took her to surgery. Much of the remaining skin had already lost its blood supply. We preserved what we could, knowing another procedure was likely.
It was.
Over six weeks: two surgeries, countless bandage changes, daily medications, patient nursing care. Chickens heal remarkably well. Cordelia slowly became herself again.
Mostly.
Her owners tell me she still hesitates before going back outside. When she does free-range, one eye stays fixed on the sky.
Her Body Healed. Her Brain Didn't
Her wounds closed. Her nervous system didn't get the memo.
This is the part that most people — and even many medical professionals — don't fully appreciate.
When a traumatic event happens, the brain doesn't file it away like an ordinary memory. Research on fear conditioning shows that the amygdala, the brain's threat-detection center, encodes threatening experiences with unusual speed and durability. This is by design. The brain essentially tags the experience: remember everything about this moment, because it might save your life next time. The sights, the sounds, the smells, the context. All of it gets flagged.
That's not a malfunction. That's the system working exactly as intended.
The problem is that the system doesn't automatically unflag things once the danger has passed. Studies on post-traumatic stress in both humans and animals consistently show that the fear response can persist long after the original threat is gone, triggered by stimuli that were present during the traumatic event. A word. A smell. A sound. The sensation of a floor moving beneath your feet.
I've had clients tell me their dog won't go into the room where they were when an earthquake hit. Think about that for a moment. The floor shook violently under them without warning. Why would the brain say that room is safe? It has no evidence that it is. Refusing to enter is the logical conclusion of the information available.
Cordelia's brain looked at the sky and reached the same conclusion. That's where the danger came from. Watch it.
She's not broken. She's doing exactly what a brain is supposed to do.
Healing Isn't Forgetting
So how do animals — and people — actually heal from this?
Not by being told to get over it. Not by being pushed back into the feared situation and overwhelmed until they shut down. That approach has a name, it's flooding, and the research on it is mixed at best and harmful at worst.
What actually works, in both veterinary behavioral medicine and human trauma therapy, is something far more patient: gradual, controlled re-exposure to the feared stimulus at levels low enough not to trigger the fear response, repeated consistently over time, until the brain builds new evidence that the thing it feared is no longer dangerous.
In behavioral medicine, we call this systematic desensitization paired with counter-conditioning. The brain isn't being told the threat wasn't real. It's being shown, slowly and repeatedly, that the current environment is safe.
I think about my nephew.
He was severely allergic to peanuts. Not the uncomfortable kind — the carry-an-EpiPen-everywhere, read-every-label, one-wrong-bite-could-kill-you kind. Over three years, under careful medical supervision, he was given peanut protein in doses so small they were measured in micrograms. A little more each time. Slow enough that his immune system could adjust without mounting the full catastrophic response.
Three years.
That's how long it took to teach his body that peanuts weren't a lethal threat. And his immune system had many more years of evidence that they were.
The nervous system works the same way. You cannot rush it with willpower. You cannot shame it into compliance. You can only show up, consistently, with safety, again and again, until the brain updates its assessment.
Some animals get there. Some don't, fully. I've known dogs who remained reactive for the rest of their lives after a severe dog attack, despite years of careful behavioral work. Their owners learned to manage their world, not cure them. That's not failure. That's honoring what the animal actually experienced.
Grace Is Good Science
Here is where I want to talk about grace.
Because here's what I see, in exam rooms, in the way people talk about trauma, in the advice that gets handed out freely to anyone who is struggling:
Just get over it.
It happened years ago.
You need to put on your big girl panties and get back out there.
I understand the impulse behind that advice. It comes, usually, from people who genuinely want someone they love to stop suffering. But it is bad science. It ignores what we know about how the brain actually processes and stores threatening experiences. And it adds a layer of shame on top of an already taxed nervous system, which, if anything, makes recovery harder.
The people I watch navigate trauma most successfully, whether they're recovering from a car accident, an abusive relationship, a medical crisis, or something that happened in childhood, are surrounded by people who understand that the brain's timeline is not the same as the calendar's timeline. They have patience in their corner. They have someone who doesn't require them to be further along than they are.
Many people need that support to be formalized. Emotional support animals, therapy animals, and service animals trained for psychiatric conditions aren't accommodations for the overly sensitive. There is a substantial body of research showing measurable reductions in cortisol, heart rate, and self-reported anxiety in trauma survivors who have regular access to animal companionship. The nervous system responds to felt safety, and sometimes an animal provides that more consistently than a human can.
When we dismiss people who need these supports as dramatic, we're not applying common sense. We're ignoring the science of how trauma actually works.
Healing Doesn't Erase What Happened
Cordelia goes outside every day now.
She hesitates at the door. She watches the sky. But she goes.
That's not a small thing. That's a brain working hard to update a model of the world built on real, terrifying evidence. She didn't forget what happened. She's learning, one day at a time, that today has been different from that day.
The hawk hasn't come back.
Not yet. Maybe not ever. And slowly, incrementally, in ways we can't fully observe, her nervous system is building a new case.
That's what healing looks like. Not a switch that flips. Not a wound that closes and leaves no trace. A slow accumulation of safe days, until the brain cautiously, provisionally, begins to lower its guard.
Give it time. Give it patience. Give it the grace you'd give a thirty-foot fall.
